Watson feels guilty for not joining them. For having to stay behind and merely hope that they won't come back with horrendous claw marks and torn bodies.
He should be out there.
He supposes he could blame Holmes for this, but truthfully, it's in his nature. He lived through a warzone, after all. He can't just sit idly by forever.
It's this line of thought that leads him to stand on the outskirts of town one morning, trying to will himself to walk away and not quite able to manage it.
